A Picture A Day...9

A yellow rose, planted in memory of my Mum, who loved yellow roses. It a David Austin rose, Graham Thomas, with a beautiful lemony fragrance. This sits on an arch in my kitchen garden. This is a beauty. I'm not sure really how to care for climbing roses, so I'd better do a bit of research, any advice?

Have a lovely Saturday, and if it's already gone, I hope it was good!

  2. We think we have this rose ~ in our garden when we moved here. We deadhead fading blooms. Prune it for a good shape late autumn or early spring. Apply some rose fertiliser in Spring when I remember ~ which I didn't!!! Fortunately it thrives on my neglect-lol.

    1. Thanks Lynn, I think I might need to tie it to the Rose arch as it seems to be flopping over! :) xxx

    2. Yes it will need a bit of gentle tying in. But I also allow ours to flop a bit as it kind our frames our living room window.

  3. Morning, Lovely rose, scented ones are not easy to find these days. Not sure how to care for climbers either. Overcast start in Sussex this morning.

    1. So far I've got 5 roses all scented David Austin ones, I love them but I'm a bit nervous of their thorns and pruning, oh and that black spotty stuff on them...I really need to learn how to look after them! ;) xxx

    2. Thing is roses are tough so if you go mad on pruning they will still be ok.

  5. It's lovely to plant a rose in memory of your Mum and you have chosen a lovely one too. My parents had a David Austin Golden Celebration rose to celebrate their Golden Anniversary. It came to me when my Mum died and it was always lovely to see it bloom again each year. David Austin has a good guide to pruning on his web site. It would be a good idea to tie it to the rose arch. 6. I've just this afternoon asked my sister (a better gardener than I am!) about black spots on our honeysuckle leaves. Apparently it's called black spot disease and roses get it too. Black spots and yellowy leaves. Destroy all fallen leaves or it will spread. You can get a spray for it at the garden centre.

There's a good reason for an outing to the garden centre!

  7. Seeing this rose on IG or a blog brings a big smile to my face.
I received this rose as a gift for my birthday this time last year from my Grandad who has dementia. His name is Graham, so it has extra sentimental value to me. I planted it in a great big pot by our front door so that I see it every day when I come in and out of the house, and visitors will always see it, even the postie! The children know that the 'rule' is to smell the rose every time they walk past it, and think of their Great Grandad (and he truly is a great man) and smile. You have excellent taste in roses :-)

  8. What a lovely coloured rose. I planted a rose called "Remembrance" in memory of my Mom and Dad who died just 16 weeks apart from each other. I visited David Austin Roses in Albrighton only last week. All the roses were in full bloom and it was an amazing sight. It's well worth a visit. I've never seen so many roses and I took loads of photos. I'm enjoying your picture a day. Alison

  9. The scent of yellow roses is the best. What a lovely rose this is. I am sorry but I can't give you any advice on how to care for roses. My own rose, a New Dawn, isn't doing so well at all. It is very nice to have a rose planted in memory of a loved one. Every year they bloom for you.
    Love,
