Plan and Precision....

To be honest, I'm not good at either of these!

After your fantastic comments on my Procrastination (which I am good at!) a Plan started to form in my mind.

I love squares (hate trying to get them to fit together!) and I love white (I love it in my crochet cushion, not too keen on the snow now though, bored with it!).

So I thought, my quilt will be made up of blocks of squares, surrounded with white, to calm it down, give it some definition.

So I'm choosing vintage and new, mixing it up, as I said. Unfortunately, I'm not great at the Precision bit, yikes, all those corners to line up...I will never get finished, or started for that manner!

So armed with tutorial I had a go at '2-for-1 Nine patch', yes didn't mean too much to me either!

Mixed results I must say, which I'm putting down to the fact I haven't got one of those quilt ruler thingys, not my lack of Precision! Actually, I'm using a narrow ruler and it's not really holding the fabric still enough to get a good cut. I do think it will be a really good way for me to put them together, once I've practiced more, who knows I might have a go at other patterns!

Not so good....

Bit better......still not giving Molly Flanders a 'run for her money' though!

Must get one of those proper ruler thingys!

These fabrics next I think......

I've got a really busy few days coming up, Eldest Bea has a birthday and I'm trying to get her crochet cushion finished. I have discussed with her the possibility it won't be, she told me not to worry. Some empathy perhaps developing for a mothers plight? No! She is making me a fabric covered notebook in her textile class, apparently I should have had it for my birthday (December!).

Welcome to those who are now following Vintage Sheet Addict, and thank you for your comments, I'll try and pop over to your blogs soon!

Don't forget I've got 15% off everything in my Etsy shop, just type WINTER15 at the checkout!

I'm sure there was something else I should have mentioned, but as I don't plan my posts.........if I remember later I'll pop it on, hope it's not something important!

Bye for now!

Ada :) x

  1. Hi Ada, love the combo of those squares, I think the colours are lovely!

I keep looking at the fabric on your blog header and keep thinking how familiar it looks. I must go and see if I have the sheets in that fabric still, I think I got the pink version of this as a wedding gift... off to check!

  2. Hello Ada, I don't really plan my posts either ... they just evolve! You're doing a great job of the quilt, I wish I had your patience. Hope your daughter has a fabulous birthday, and would be nice if the cushion was finished, but I'm sure she'll understand if it's not. Hope you share your fabric notebook with us, it sounds lovely!

Have a warm and wonderful Wednesday

    Love, Claire xxx

  3. Hello Ada,

Well sometimes I have a little post in draft waiting for ages, but mostly I just either get inspired or what to catch up.

I love your patchwork but I have to admit to not being very precise with it either, as my dinning room curtains are testament!

Wishing your daughter a fab birthday.

  5. your sewing is looking lovely already, i wouldn't worry about being too precise, i've got a proper quilters ruler & it doesn't help me much! i made my mum a small nine patch lap quilt a few years ago, once it was quilted & binded you didn't notice all the bits that didn't quite line up

  9. Such beautiful choices for colour combinations!! You can spend a lot of time fussing over those pesky corners trying to match them up, or just let it be. The best way to keep everything looking good is NOT TO POINT OUT MISMATCHED CORNERS TO OTHERS. Seriously - everyone is looking at the fabric & prints, not the precision of the corners. (Having said that, one trick is to sew a narrow border around each set of nine blocks so you aren't trying to match even more corners when you put all the nine-patches together!). I love the shades of green in the next set :) Wendy

  13. A ruler thingy and that cutter whatsit do really help for the precision.
But as I say to my quilting pals and myself....it's not being judged in a show....don't worry....and if you step back is it noticeable from a distance?.....will it visible once it's put together as a whole quilt?.......quilting covers a multitude of errors......what makes a quilt charming and homemade, the little wobbles!......it's art darling.....STOP ME NOW OR I WILL GO ON FOREVER...:-)

  14. It's looking great - you'll never notice the joins once you've finished it and are using it - or at least that's what I tell myself with my quilts!

  17. Ada, we have had a saying in our quilting group "Finished is better than perfect!" and so it is! That doesn't mean you don't do your best, just don't beat yourself up over minor discrepancies. Your top looks good to me! Lx

  20. well done Ada on your first bit of patchwork, looking good to me. I must admit I find it much easier with the proper tools and a rotary cutter, I also have a quarter inch foot on the sewing machine that helps, it is the enjoyment in making not the perfection that matters, you are doing a great job.

  22. Well I, like everyone else, think it looks lovely already. Great choice of fabrics and who cares abouthe joins, you'll never notice it when it's all done. Blimey, I never knew you could get a proper quilter's ruler. I'm doing a quilt at the moment for a friend. Little planning and little precision and just bung it all together seems to be my motto. xx

  27. Ada! I love it! It is perfect in every way! Your fabrics look so lovely together. It is difficult to cut without a rotary and acrylic ruler and mat, but certainly not impossible. When I started quilting I only had a pencil and scissors. I used templates for most everything. But sometimes working with what you have and making it come together gives you so much more joy than have the latest shiny gadget to guide you through. Your points are looking fabulous! So glad you are quilting....I hope you love it in the end :)

  29. Oh my first attempts at lining up squares was exactly like this, and I have not yet gone back for a second go! Love that cheats way of whipping up three in row! Keep it up, you are so consistent at just keeping on and having a go. it's all abit all over the shop at our place, currently just trying to survive the last few days of 6 weeks of school holidays with a child who really needs his usual routine and a sister who knows how to press all his buttons! Give me strength, mel x

  31. Hi Ada
I saw a comment you made and came to visit. I was drawn by the name of your blog. I make quilts too. Get yourself a ruler and a large cutting mat. It's the best investment you'll make and it will help you so much in being more precise. I love your colors. I have been thinking of doing a little crocheting too. I tried it once years ago but didn't continue for some reason. I'll be back again. Rhondi
