Procrastinating.......

I can't settle, I can't decide, I keep putting it off.......

These fabrics have been scattered around, old and new, like I said.....mixing it up a bit. I want to make a quilt using these, but

How

Do

You

Decide?

I love the colours, I love the patterns.....I just can't decide? (I'm also putting off the cutting them out!)

So I'll just carry on here.....

I like the white, although there was no more DK left only 4 ply so it looks a bit different but ok, crocheting with 4 ply feels odd though! Like trying to crochet a cloud!

Or Snow.......

It looks so beautiful but causes chaos, we are snowed in today, no school, no work....just playing, crafting and music making....oh and a walk in the snow later, if it stops!!!

So how do you decide on a quilt? Do you spread out your fabric stash hoping for inspiration? Do you keep putting it off? Or is it just me and my muddled head? Is anyone else full of ideas but finding it hard just to GET ON WITH IT!!!!!

Back later in the week, I wonder if I will have finished (or even started!) anything......

Ada :) x

  1. I'm with you on a headful of ideas. Loadsa them but I've not started on one. I'm too lazy that's the problem. Aaaah, fabric indecisions. Luckily for me my stash is quite small so I don't have that problem! I'm sure whatever you choose will look wonderful. xx

  2. Decide you will FOCUS on one colour or two/one scale - tiny, medium, large/one tone - light medium, dark....Just choose ONE of these, select and start putting them together! Narrow down your options! Keep it simple! Stop worrying! Enjoy!
    (I've been here too...)

  3. Oh I know exactly what you're talking about Ada! It took me soooo long to decide how to put my rainbow quilt together...and I still haven't started another one cause I can't decide what to do next!! I think the most important thing to remember is - you can always make another one. So decide what shape and size you want to work with, and cut them out. Then play with the bits till you like what you see. And then crack on with sewing the strips together quickly before you change your mind! You might well look at it when it's finished and see something you could have done differently - I did! But that's ok - you can use that as inspiration for your next quilt! Good luck with it, I'm sure it'll be gorgeous. Rachel xx

  4. Oh don't worry I can waste hours (no make that days) unfolding fabric, laying it out, folding it up, stacking it..... to scared to cut it!
Once you take the plunge just keep going until it's done!

  5. Bless you. I started off another quilt towards the end of last year using all my pretty vintage sheets. I cut them out and started to hand sew them and then i got the crochet blanket bug again and made 2 double bed size ones. Then last week i got out my vintage sheet patchwork again and im loving it again. So maybe thats the key inspiration will come when you really really want to do it. Good luck and enjoy :-) dee xx

  6. Aww I'm sure you'll work our magic soon Ada ... I'm procrastinating too, really want to do something creative but I don't know what, and keep stopping and starting things! The snow is falling, the first real snow we've had, but doesn't seem to be sticking, despite snowing all day ...

    Keep warm and toasty

    Love Claire xxx

  7. Lots of procrastination going on here too unfortunately, oh well, when the time's right.... Love the white, it works so well. Your fabrics are beautiful, no wonder it's hard to make that first cut! xx

  8. I like that quilt on the cover of your book! Something like that would be a perfect match for your numerous fabrics ... and it's a good jumping off point because you only need to cut squares. Cut all your squares using a variety of fabrics; sew them up in rows randomly choosing colours as you go; sew rows together. Done! I agree with Rachel that anything you don't like in the first quilt can be changed next time round. Good luck with it :) Wendy

  14. Lay out all your fabrics and just trust your instincts, Ada, as you have a really good eye for colour and pattern so it will all work out in the end.

I know what you mean about procrastinating - I want to start a huge granny square blanket, just one big square, but I can't decide what colours to use. I am paralysed by indecision!

  16. Hi there dear. I am there with you. It takes a while for me to choose my fabric. Sometimes I choose the fabric but after starting to cut the pieces out I suddenly feel that "this one doesn't really belong here anymore" or " I need a one more bright". Take it as you go. I think it looks yum already Start cutting your 5 favorites and if you want to add more add more. Trust your gut feeling. Quilts never end up looking like they do in this stage of planning them anyway. When squares are sewn together that is when it starts to evolve and after adding your quilting and binding - magic appears. Have fun.

  18. my son asked me what procrastinate means this morning! I thought oh this I can explain! if in doubt just keep crocheting. But seriously those fabrics look nice, you have some lovely blue vintage sheets to mix in. I don't think you'll go far wrong. Good luck, I haven't made a quilt yet! Heather x

  19. I think chop, chop and it will all come together ... those fabrics are beautiful and couldn't fail to be pretty in a quilt ... just think how much more pleasure you will have when they are made into something you can use and admire everyday ... as NIKE once said 'just do it' ;) ... Bee xx

  20. You can't go wrong with that lovely mix of fabrics you have. If this is your first quilt I would start with squares and once you have them all cut out, lay them on the floor and stand on a chair to look down on them to see if the mix is right. Once you start you'll have a ball : -)

  23. I think you will see your layout for the photo may be a start, it looks a little similar to your crochet colours, n'est pas?
In fact taking photos is a great way to see how a design and colour works.
Charm squares would be the easiest way to start, 3 inches by 3 inches lay them out in a grid pattern, move the colours around, take a photo....looking good....then start to sew them in rows and before you know it...a quilt.
Simple to start and the fabrics will do the work, get too fiddly and you may loose the fabric and loose interest.
Looking forward to seeing how it pans out.

  26. Sometimes you have to take the plunge...you can learn from mistakes.
Where is the quilt going to live? Go to that room with your fabrics and see if they work.
Or like me make a two fabric quilt....though now I'm wondering about what colour to quilt it and what binding!!

  32. Ha! I have been collecting quilt fabric for years and still have to make a real one.
It's all that repetition that puts me off yet I'm happy to make a granny rug in crochet...
What you have there looks just dandy to me. Just start and it will look great whatever you do!
