Birth of a Quilt?......

Is this the birth of a quilt I wonder?
I've made up all the nine square blocks.....

Some better than others! Some didn't match up very well, I then realised I'd mixed up the squares, won't do that next time! Well actually I say that, but unfortunately, I'm not one of those people who learn from their mistakes, well only perhaps after making the same mistake 20 times!!!

Now, my friends, what do I do next?......

I want to put white between each square, and maybe a small square of the backing material, at the corner of the big squares.....but what's the best way?

Any advice would be great, or links to other sites!

I love the mix of old and new, and the fresh colours!

I've popped the moderation thingy on, some weird messages, and unfortunately I've accidentally deleted some of your messages! If yours is one of them.....I AM SO SORRY!
I'm rubbish with all this stuff! I'm sure I will get the hang of it, once I've accidentally eliminated 20 of your messages, of course!

I'll be back next week with my latest Printers Tray, which I love, there won't be a finished quilt, but maybe some progress.....

Ada :) x

Etsy stuff....

I will be putting some more bundles and scrap packs in over this next week. These are from my own stash, I'm only putting them on to make some space, and don't think I will be selling them on a regular basis, in the future.

Also postage and packaging. If I have accidentally overcharged for P&P I refund the customer, through their PayPal account. I've under charged on several occasions now, and want to ensure I cover the cost. It's all a bit trial and error, but I'm getting a better idea of how much things cost to post!

I will also be listing some china and Pyrex bits....need to sort out them there cupboards!!! Kitchen refurb on its way!

Please email me if you have any queries.

  3. Ada, love your 9 patch blocks. Here is directions to finish your quilt. First measure and trim all your 9 patch blocks so they are the same size. Then decide how big you want your sashing strips. If you want the sashing to be 2" finished then cut 2 1/2" strips of the white. Then cut enough of the 2 1/2" strips into the same length as the 9 patch blocks to put in between each block. So if you have 4 blocks in a row you will need 3 strips in between the blocks and 2 strips at the beginning and end. Sew the 4 blocks and the 5 strips together to make a row. Then cut your blocks for the corner squares in the sashing - 2 1/2" x 2 1/2" and cut your sashing strips to the same size as the 9 patch blocks. Now you will make a sashing "row" by piecing a corner block and a sashing strip and then a corner block and a sashing strip and so on (ending with a corner block) until it is the same size as the row of 9 patch/strips row. Then you will sew all of the rows together from the top to the bottom. One row of sashing strips/ 9 patch blocks then a row of corner blocks and sashing strips, then a row of sashing strips and 9 patch blocks and so on until all rows are sewn together. Hopefully this makes sense, it is really hard to describe in words.

    1. Thanks for your advice! I have trimmed each one.....but didn't check they were all the same size!!! Oh well, that's another evening job then! I will read through this properly before I do anything else to it! :) x

  4. This quilt will look beautiful when finished!! Great start with the blocks. There's some great instructions already posted here I see! You're basically connecting the squares to make a row, then sewing each row together. Very simple, just time consuming. If you're sewing with 1/4" seams, be very careful with the exact size of the blocks because it doesn't give you a lot of leeway if one is significantly off sized. You're getting so much done these days, I feel quite lazy in comparison!! Wendy

PS ... the snow started ... ugh!

  11. Great colors! How is it mixed up? It looks perfect to me. No idea how to join it. Maybe rectangles of white in between as additional patches?
Those seedy commenters have been polluting a few of my old posts too. They really are barking up the wrong tree with us. Ish I could send some clever hackslosion back down the cyber hole to them!
I can't get onto your etsy to peek at your Pyrex.(lthough I know the postage would be ridiculous to here.)

Oh Ada, your quilt looks gorgeous! I love the fabrics together. Just a thought, Cut strips of sashing your prefered width plus your seam allowance ( u could make them finish the same width as each of your patches in your blocks) and have the sash pieces a teeny bit longer than each 9 patch block. Sew 1 to top and 1 to bottom of block AND THEN TRIM. You will have to do some accurate measuring for the side bits with your print patches at each end of your sashing piece and then join up the whole row of blocks. The next row underneath will only need the side bits of sashing done. Oh my goodness all that doesn't make any sense at all!! I will lend you one of my books if you want.....Sam x

  22. They look great! Very even and neat (to my eyes, anyway!). Gorgeous fabrics in a happy mix of old and new, busy and restful. No idea what to suggest for the next stage of the quilt - I'll let those who know advise you - but I can't wait to see the finished result.

  27. Hi Ada, I think a white background on your quilt will look superb and it will really bring it all together. I've got no advice on the process, I'm a novice quilter so I'll be keen to learn from you as you go. x

  28. This is going to be fabulous! Can't help with the technical stuff I'm afraid - my patching/quilting skills are very rusty - but yes, white sashing, lots of it :D

  29. Ha ha, when the photo came up in my reading list I thought you'd already finished the quilt with beige strips in between, but it turned out to be your rug! I think white between will really make the colours pop.

  30. I love your nine patch squares. I agree with you some sashing with pops of color at the crossroads would be nice. If you have some scraps try an unexpected splash of color....perhaps even a great orange or orange/red. Something that pops and keeps your eye moving throughout the quilt! It is fantastic, Ada!
