Down The Garden Path: March.

Well almost down the garden, the path stops abruptly at the top of the steps. This is where it will eventually start. This area gets very little morning sun and because of that it can be difficult to grow some things, perfect for a garden path though. With an arch at its entrance I think...what climbers grow in the shade I wonder.

The grass is really starting to green up now. I had grand plans for the top part of the garden, but after realising the cost, I've scaled these back somewhat. I had wanted raised beds on three sides. Instead, parts of the lawn will be relaid, the flowerbed on the left removed (to make way for a path), and on the right I will have a raised bed built, with a seating area. Eventually I may have another raised bed built near the retaining wall, as funds allow. Raised beds are great for me, much easier for me to manage, they are almost Otto proof too!

Shoots are coming up all over the place...it's an exciting time for a gardener. These are the ones Otto has missed, for now anyway. There's weeds coming up too, so I keep going out with my trowel and having short weeding sessions.

There's not much happening yet in my greenhouse. I've delayed sowing, it's been bitterly cold here. I will start next week sowing some veg and flowers, I'm planning on growing lots of my own flowers this year, usually it's just sunflowers and sweet peas. Dahlias will be a first for me too. Those complimentary Slug-Busters have arrived too from Agriframes, thank you! I will let you all know how they work.

Some of the raised beds have been filled and two planted up, one with strawberries and one salad, chard, beet and shallots. Two will be for cut flowers. We have put up our second arch from Agriframes, easier this time. That's the royal We by the way...and the next little project the royal We will be doing (hopefully next week whilst he's off work, sssh, he doesn't know it yet!)...

Is this, to move the compost bin, (it's almost empty don't worry!), relocate the herbs, and put in another raised bed for raspberry bushes. I've got summer fruiting ones, but intend to get some autumn ones too.

Joining in with Sarah...I've changed the title, My Garden In sounded a bit boring, Down The Garden Path...much more exciting! ;)

So what will April bring...

Sowing lots of flowers and seeds.
Filling up all those raised beds.
Establishing a raspberry bed.
And tidy up the top garden, so at least I can live with it, before the bigger changes happen.

So what's happening down your garden path, I'd love to hear!

Amanda :) xxx

  2. I hope you enjoy your pottering. Gardening help keeps me sane though as we are planning a make over my growing choices will be limited this year. Thanks you for your comment & for following me. I planted a honeysuckle a couple of years back in a shady spot. It took a while to establish but it's looking healthy and should supply me with some flowers this year xx

  4. Hi Amanda, it sure is looking different now. Fascinating when all the little shoots start to appear. This will be the first year without a "free range" bunny in the garden, therefore fencing around most things. I am waiting for a garden man to give me a quote for a little work. Will have to see what we can do.

    1. Well I thought he might be a digger but hadn't anticipated he'd want to eat everything! Yes gardening work is very expensive, I can't do things myself anymore and hubbie is a musician not a practical man, sadly. I'm very lucky though, my pension has enabled me to do the things I've done so far. Hope you get done what you wish for! :) xxx

Your garden is looking lovely and is really taking shape, love the way the path snakes around to your raised beds and your studio it all looks gorgeous and with the beds all filled going to be lovely. I have yet to plant my strawberries but all the veg seeds are sown all I have left to plant are my seed potatoes, corn of the cob and pumpkin :-) Have fun, dee x

  6. Its looking good, I hope your other half is able to get plenty done while he's off work. I've planted a hydrangea petiolaris against a north facing wall here. It's self-clinging (no wires required) and white flowered. Mine has yet to flower, but apparently it's good for bees and butterflies as well. CJ xx

  9. I love your garden layout, I wish I had more raised beds, id like one for cut flowers, I have a large-ish bed that i throw seeds in and hope for the best, I grew Dahlia but I think the snow a few winters ago did for them as ive not seen them for a while, this year I need to replace my lavender bushes as they are very leggy and straggly, I have a 2 shady spots in the garden one has the petiolaris hydrangea which is just springing back into life now and the other had a shade loving honeysuckle which smelt amazing and grew brilliantly even though it was in deep shade against a wall under the walnut tree ! the boys arent interested in plants...but the wood shed is another story !!

    1. Think I'm definately going to need a pile of logs Mim to keep him happy...and me! I love your garden, it's got great character. Both those plants have been mentioned as shade lovers, might have to have a few arches to accommodate them...Agrifames will love me! (My purse won't though!) ;) xxx

  10. Amazing what spring does to us isn't it? I thought you just had 3 of those lovely raised tin beds, how lovely they all look. We are very slowly re-doing our garden - like you I have so many ideas! Our tiny lawn may be coming up and doing away with - we don't use it any more, and i'd like a wild gravel garden, with poppies and heat loving plants and mediterranean herbs poking through the gravel…..oooh t'will be lovely! I too use the Royal We in matters gardening, though I am trying to get in there and get my hands dirty! I LOVE what you've done so far. Patience eh? ;)

  11. Love your garden and I know I say that with every comment I make but I really drool over your space and your studio. Can't wait to see it as the summer comes into it and all your plants are looking great and to have a new area for fruit trees. Sounds great! I've pulled some weeds, planted two rose bushes and mowed the grass. It needs to be mowed again!! Love your collage!! I'm so glad that you kept blogging as I would have missed all these wonderful garden posts and the cute cat and dog photos!!!
