...that blog posts might be a little inconsistent at the moment. Our new puppy, Otto, will be joining us at the end of the week. It feels a bit like I'm getting ready to give birth again.
I'm anticipating joy, laughter, exhaustion, and not having a moment to myself, at least for the first couple of months. I know eventually he will settle down, get used to our rules, and that at some point, puddles will only happen outside, and I won't have to be constantly watching out for those little teeth chewing at my furniture.
Until that point I will blog as much as I can, they may be photo rich and word poor. I'm sure Otto will feature quite heavily. So please, bare with me, we've got quite an adventure ahead of us! I grew up with dogs, so know how much love and companionship they can give. Funnily enough, I don't ever remember the hard work that was involved. I'm under no illusion, as much as he will be a family dog...most of the responsibility will fall on me!
Any advice on binging up a puppy would be gratefully received, tips to make things easier for him, for us. Thank you so much!

Exciting :) Have lots of fun. Our puppy comes home the weekend after yours, still need to get the collar and lead but think I've got the rest of the necessary things. It's better than having a baby I think, at least I don't have to give birth or breasfeed this one lol
ReplyDeleteI wish I could help but I've never had a puppy. Your pink flowery background is exactly the same as a quilt cover I had many years ago!
ReplyDeleteNo advice to offer, I am way too soft towards any animal I come in contact with. Have a lot of fun and share a lot of pictures!
ReplyDeletePoor kitty :(
ReplyDeleteWhen I came across your blog today I did a double take. Your pink background reminded me of when I was young and I had bedding like this. Brought back many happy memories of when I was young. Thank you . Good luck with your little pup he will bring you lots of joy. Looking forward to seeing you write about him .
ReplyDeleteAlways happy to see puppies when their owners are able to share them! xx
ReplyDeleteHow exciting! Good luck! Look out cat! CJ xx
ReplyDeleteMy only advice would be to enjoy every minute, just as with children you soon forget the bad and they grow up so quickly! Have Fun!!! x
ReplyDeletePuppy pics! Hurrah! A change from the everlasting cat pics on face book! (Sorry, cat lovers!) As and when, Amanda, as and when! Lxx
ReplyDeleteI have seen Ottos's baby photos over on Instagram, he is so adorable. I am sure he will bring much happiness to you and your family, he might be a little disruptive for Minnie and your other kitty until they get used to his puppy ways but they will all get along eventually.

How lovely!!!! I have a lovely new puppy too, he was a surprise birthday present. Our little Murphy has responded well to toilet training by simply putting him outside every hour and saying "toilet" and them praising him when he performs. Enjoy your new bundle, puppies/dogs bring such joy to your life. xx
ReplyDeleteGet a puppy crate that you can make really lovely and cosy a place for him to have quiet time, a place for him to feel safe and a place you can lock when you need to rest... if he always knows the crate as a okay place to be, his cave... his place... you'll know he is safe and so is everything else and you'll be able to switch off... your life is about to explode with fun enjoy the ride... hugs Cass x
ReplyDeleteall the best for your new family "adventure" !!!!!

aahhh you going to have so much fun with Otto :-) I rescue Greyhounds and my girls give me so much joy and pleasure. Just be patient and reward the good be firm but gentle. But most of all just enjoy him, dee x
ReplyDeleteTop tip - sniffing a lot (possibly going round in circles) mean getting ready to pee - so pop outside pronto. Poo time often follows a meal. Good luck.
ReplyDeleteI can't wait to see Otto being featured in your blog! My parent's friends had a dachshund called Otto when I was a child I was very fond of, and was even allowed to take him on walks down the street. My parents and I had a wired dachshund puppy when I was 20. I didn't remember the hard work either when it was a puppy! Sarah x
ReplyDeleteI do love that lampshade of yours...
ReplyDeletePhoto rich and word poor is the approach here too at the moment. I hope you enjoy the puppy and he doesn't get too much of a taste for your furniture!

Hey. That sounds great. I am finally lookng forward to see Otto!
ReplyDeleteI wish you and your family a lot of joy with Otto.
May he be the best buddy of you all.
Have a great time. Angela
Wonderful! It's been so long since I had a puppy, what joy they bring. My Father was a great teacher re dogs, he said one must be consistent as they are creatures of habit. Be kind, but firm. They learn from a very early age and are content with boundaries. Please share many pictures! x
ReplyDeleteLiving as I do with one elderly dachshund (the last of a long line we had as pups from a breeder friend over the years) and five whippets, the oldest of whom is 8 years old, the youngest two 5 years old, some rescues, all raised from puppies - I was the puppy 'specialist' for a whippet rescue for a while, hence the crazy number - I do know quite a bit about raising canine babies so if I can help with anything Amanda just message me. More generally I'd say your number one priority after housetraining is establishing a good recall, but I'm sure you know that. Good luck. And have fun x
ReplyDeleteHi Amanda, I have been quietly following your blog for a while now and couldn't resist congratulating you on your new puppy. We bought a pup three years ago and even after lots if research, I was so surprised at the amount of work and care they need. But what you put in you will get back tenfold, I was also surprised at how quickly we all fell in love with the little dog. I couldn't be without her now. Good luck, can't wait to read your puppy posts. x
ReplyDeleteMy friend just got a puppy 1 month ago. I am amazed that this dog has already "taught" me to view each day with irrepressible excitement and joy, to not be afraid of new things, and to LOVE everyone! It will be a small dog (I have always had large ones) and he is SO cute! Thank you for writing this and all the best with your new puppy! Ellen
