Lessons I Am Learning This Week.......

In no particular order of importance, but they are Very Good Lessons to learn!

1. Ensure children understand tree being made IS NOT to replace usual real tree, acquired for Christmas festivities! (Some tears were had, with exclamations of "Are we THAT poor that our Christmas tree has to be made out of old lampshades and sheets!" I am hopeful they will like it... eventually!).

2. Double sided sticky tape works better than glue.

3. Double sided sticky tape (DSST from now on, life's too short!) is a tricky medium, be VERY CAREFUL where you put it!

4. DSST has both good and evil properties, be very aware of its evil side, don't let it catch you unawares!

5. It can be very tricky to peel off backing from DSST, muttering very quietly under your breath, so children don't hear, helps! Although I'm still unsure why.

6. Thinner ribbons work better than the wider ones, less haste more speed!

7. It would have been wise to pay more attention to bandage application, during First Aid training!

8. Don't despair when you wake up in morning to find some unravellment of ribbons (think I have just made that word up, but I'm sure you know what I mean!) just get pegs and glue out! (Pegs lesson learnt from Ellie over at Jelly Jam during suitcase creations, it was very tiring holding down wallpaper whilst glue dried, it took me a long time to recover!).

9. I LOVE my 1970s Horrockses sheet!

10. Life isn't perfect......this tree doesn't have to be.....

11. Sarah Moore herself has expressed a desire to see the finished tree, this is one project that cannot remain a WIP!

This is all you get to see of the tree until December! It's taking some time, needs some patience, but then again, these creations are the ones I seem to get drawn too!

Don't forget to enter my giveaway, details on previous post....also details on how to get 20% off in my Etsy shop!

Welcome to all those of you who are new to Vintage Sheet Addict.....hope you are enjoying your visits!

Happy Thanksgiving to those who celebrate! Have a lovely Day!

  2. Oooh its all coming along very nicely...DSST is a very tricky medium..by the time I get the backing paper off it I have forgotten what it was for!!!
Your right children do get it so wrong sometimes, bless them..I printed and made my own wrapping paper one year and I got asked the same question "are we that poor!"
    Have a wonderful day

  4. Loving it already. Just glue through it, no matter how much it or you start to unravel! I too am attracted to complicated, work it out as you go, tedious type projects. Very excited about the giveaway and coming to order in the shop with haste. mel x

  8. I admire your patience with the DSST. After a few choice words mine would have ended up in the bin!
Your tree is going to be worth all the effort and will be admired for years to come.

  9. Ah the wonders and horrors of DSST. I naturally like to keep my nails very short which means it always takes me about 5 minutes to pull the backing of the tape. Grrrr! Looking forward to seeing the tree all pretty and finished next month.

  10. Your DSST trauma is going to be so worthwhile when the 'tree' is finished! Children do view things differently, the youngest RV has already requested that we do not use my vintage china for Christmas dinner. He wants us to pretend to be posh for the day!

  13. Wow it looks fab!
I use a glue gun for mine or just tie it on. Have burnt fingers but not giving up!

  14. Oh will you look at that! It's just great and the finished tree will be very cool indeed. Clever you - and erm..yes..DSST is a pain in the wotsit.

    I love your sheet too - it's gorgeous. :)

  15. I've seen one like that somewhere recently - magazine?book?

Am tempted to try one if I can find enough lampshades quickly enough - failing that it can go on the list for Christmas 2013!!

  16. I love its skeletal see-through looks, I have a wire mannequin from the 50s that has a similar look, and I'm sure she would look very nice embellished with fabric, too.

  17. Love the tree Ada ... did you try Mod Podge for the sticking ... might be worth a go ... Bee xx

  22. Looking really good Ada, I also love love your sheet you are using. I have a very special massive collection of Horrocks candy striped sheets and I greedily will not give them away because as far as I am concerned they represent a happy childhood to me and I insist on Alice having them on her bed as my mum did for me :o)Take good care with that pesky DSST, sounds likeone could get in a right pickle with it xox Penelope

  25. Whenever I've used DSST I've spent an inordinate amount of time trying to get the backing off. I must try the muttering under my breath next time!

  26. I'm so glad you're going to complete this and reveal the final results (hopefully EARLY December?). The bones of the lamps are so cute and flirty! Your poor girls thinking those thoughts!! Maybe they'd 'see the light' (ha ha) if they added a few decorations themselves (or perhaps this is a strictly Ada Bea endeavour?). I can't wait to see the final result!! Wendy

  27. I think the tree looks super already. The peg idea IS a good one... may have to use that myself. Just been in Hobbycraft (the horror!) and they were selling individual giant pegs. They were huge! I think I must have been staring at them for a good five minutes thinking, 'what large pegs'. Next time I'm gluing a large project you may have provided me with the solution!

I am making my own crackers this year. I did last year too but they had no snap, so I insisted all family members (all much older and less excited than me) cried 'bang!' enthusiastically as they pulled. This year, I have treated them to snaps to save them the trouble.

Enjoy making the rest of your tree!

  28. Ada, it's looking pretty good already!! How cool that Sarah Moore wants to see it. I agree, double sided sticky tape can be a nightmare to use, very fiddly, and involves much swearing under my breath! x

  29. I love how it turned out already!! Such great idea.
    Happy weekend!

  30. It looks fantastic! Did you consider using Mod Podge? I don't know if that is sold here but surely is easier than sticky tape :) Can't wait to see the big reveal!
