We I've finally finished the little crib for my friends young daughter!
I brought this 1970's crib for a car boot sale last summer, the lady who sold it to me had cleared out her Dads loft space, as he needed to go into a residential home. There were lots of 70s toys and games and we had a good old chat about how great toys used to be (gosh, better stop there, sounding just like my parents!).
She was obviously very emotional about seeing all her old toys again, and the prospect of her Dad no longer living in her childhood home. I promised to take good care of it and breathe new life into it, I hope she would approve of what I've done!
My very own Teeny Tiny Tears is modelling for me today, do you remember these dolls? I loved her so much. When I first saw the crib I was amazed at how small it was, I'm not sure today's dolls will even fit in! Luckily original 1970's dolls do!
I've made a little quilt and pillow, and recovered the base....all in original 70s fabric......now all I have to do is, part with it!
What was your favourite toy? I was definitely a doll, tea set and teddy child...oh and roller skates, the silver and red leather ones, I went EVERYWHERE on them!
Now, I promised to show you the vintage sheet I found last week...
A double quilt and two pillowcases, in great condition, I'm not even sure if the quilt has been used that much, although the pillowcases are slightly faded. Don't you just love it when you find such treasures!
I've started my suitcase makeover and hope to finish later in the week. I'm going for a fabric cover this time, a little calmer than my last one, but with a jazzy interior!

This is wonderful Ada!!! You are such a generous friend and are going to make a little girl very very happy. We have almost the exact cradle here but life-sized for baby Flynn, also picked up second hand. I'm always saying "shh don't wake the baby!" too. The little quilt and pillow with your fabrics is super sweet. I was very much into Barbies, and my preemie Cabbage Patch doll :-) Mel x
ReplyDeleteThe crib looks so cheery now, especially with the pretty 70s blanket and pillow ... your friend & her daughter will love it!! Hmmm my favourite toy? I had one Barbie doll and 'Velvet', a doll whose hair extended when you pushed her belly button (still have her!). I also still have my very loved and much worn Poodle plush dog, who was originally a pajama bag from Grandma. I played endlessly with Meccano sets, Tinker Toy and mini bricks with my brother. Wendy

DeleteLove the crib, I had a tiny tears in the 70s too. She arrived on Xmas day with her friend 'black dolly'- my parents were obviously way ahead of their time by buying me a non-white doll, she just didn't get a very pc name! Tiny tears has a dodgy shoulder though as her arm kept falling out. I've a photo of them somewhere in their cardboard box bed!

ReplyDeleteHmm, toys... I'm an 80s girl (born in '79) so I loved Care Bears, Barbie, My Little Pony... and when I wasn't playing with those, I would be hiding in the garage ransacking my dads tools and wood, hammering something together with rusty nails then slathering it with paint!
My sister had tiny tears, and teeny tiny tears. I was more of a tom-boy, bikes, roller-skates and football with the boys. Although my favourite thing was being allowed to play with my Nan's button tin :)

So sweet, I'm sure your friend's daughter will love it. Sadly I don't have my old tiny tears anymore though I can still vividly remember the thrill of opening the Christmas present she came in. The one doll I still have is hidden at the back of my wardrobe because she scares my children - they call her zombie doll because she has little hair left and is rather battered. Apparently I dragged her round everywhere with me when I was learning to walk, I loved that doll! Mrs RV x

ReplyDeleteMy favourite toys were a garage and lots of Dinky toy cars, and then later a toy stables that my Dad made, and which I filled with Brittains ponies. I remember being taken to the toy shop on special occasions to buy a new pony to add to my collection, and the agony of only being able to choose one!

ReplyDeleteDo you remember Katy Kopycat - you used to sit her on the other side of a little yellow desk and she would hold a pen then - by the magic of levers - she would copy what you did! She had a bit of a mullet haircut but a very friendly face! Jane x

Hi Ada. You've done a wonderful job with the crib,I recognised Tiny tears straight away and still have mine,I spent hours upon hours playing with her when I was little,bathing her dressing her,cutting her hair, oops!

DeleteI wanted a Barbie so bad......but my mum thought they were just a passing phase! I did get a large bride doll though, whose hair frizzled when left in a very hot car.
ReplyDeleteLooks like Barbie was too much of a flibberty jibbit for my parents, instead I was being indoctrinated to being a dutiful bride.........which indeed I am...:-)
Still I would rather be Barbie some days.
Ahh she is fast asleep..you have made up a beautiful cot, I am sure your friend will be thrilled, I still have a Tiny Tears and a Tommy Tears (he arrived with extras),, they are in the loft I must get them out, poor things

ReplyDeleteoh its fab!...I had a Baby Alive...you fed her and she wee`d and pooped...I fed her weetbix and she suffered from a cockroach infestation....off she went to the sanatorium...never to be seen again.....now Ada...step away from the cot!! x

DeleteHa ha I found the exact same sheet set in my local charity shop! mine has def been used as it is a little fadded but still Im very proud of my find too. the only thing is that i love the fabric so much I dont want to use it for fear I will never find another one.

Im very new to girly stuff, I hated dolls as a child the worst toy in the world for me! I distinctly remember wishing I was a boy lol but in the last 6 years Im a fully fledged lady what shopps in Hobbs and Radley and the such, oh how we change.
I cannot resist a great vintage find either so well done on your find and for putting it to good use.

ReplyDeleteI had a tiny tears and my sister has a baby alive. We preferred playing with the toy phone (taking hairdressing appointments of all things!) and a toy set of old fashioned scales - Mum's dried runner beans were weighed countless times. The crib and bedding look fab. I think I have some of those fabrics stashed away somewhere. xx

ReplyDeleteI cannot tell you how much I yearned for a Tiny Tears as a child...I well up at the mere thought....I knew it would never happen. I would long for the last day of term when children could bring their own toys in and I knew that Ann Gardener would bring in....Tiny Tears. I would take in my old jigsaw puzzle and hide it with the shame of it all....

DeleteWhat a fabulous job Ada - love it! I had a Tiny Tears too... My Dad made some beautiful wooden dolls table and chairs for us as kids and I have it now - perfect for Blythes! Still a big kid at heart :)
