Shopping.....without children!

I love my children, I love quirky shops.....unfortunately the two don't always mix! Eldest Bea has a sensitive nose, and there are always lots of smells in shops full of old stuff! Little Bea, well after a little while, she just gets bored!

So my weekend away was an opportunity, for a little wonder around some of the lovely little shops Derbyshire had to offer......

But what about Mr Bea I hear you say....well, fortunately he learnt many years ago, to stroll after me, pace or two behind, ready to carry any bags! Over the years however, he's got very good at using the girls as an excuse not to venture inside any of my quirky shops!

But as the girls weren't there, he strolled around with me, every now and again wishing we could stumble upon a musical instrument shop! Now that would be interesting....if Mr Bea kept dragging me around musical instrument shops, I wonder how compliant I would be..........

I'm always a little disappointed when shops call themselves vintage but still have lots of new stuff in them, that's just labelled vintage! There were some nice things though.

Wished I had brought a green and yellow one now!

Now this is what I call a proper vintage shop.....'Vintage Rooms' in Matlock!

I had old suitcase envy again....I wonder if there's a tablet you can take for that?

I resisted though.....bit too expensive for me.....

Even Mr Bea didn't mind wondering around this shop....

Loved these chairs....

But unfortunately I didn't have enough pennies to indulge!

What's your family like? Into the retro, vintage vibe....or do they just think you're mad like mine?!! Now I wonder if I can get these to look like the ones in the shop?........

Yes, I know it looks like someone's had an accident....but can I work my magic?......

I picked up four....all for less than £10, just need to decide on colours, and let the girls choose which of my vintage sheets they would like for the seats!

Eldest Bea has just seen the chair, I'd been hiding them down the cellar.
"I'm NOT sitting on that" she declared.
"That's mine sweetheart, don't worry"......
"Phew!" she declared.
"Yours is down the cellar" I whispered.

I don't think she heard me, but I'm sure she will love it, once it's been painted!

Bye!

Ada :) x

  1. Looks like you visited some treasure troves there - I know what you mean though I think 'vintage' is an often misplaced word in the hope it will bring in customers - grrr. I have high hopes for those chairs - looking forward to the results! Jane x

  3. I know what you mean too ... do you remember my 'We need to talk about vintage' post?

Glad to see you had such a lovely little holiday, and reading your last post your Mr Bea sounds a lot like my Mr K ... both keepers, clearly ;)

  4. I cant wait to see what colours you paint your 50's chairs and the fabric you use. I would like to start up another blog and make it private and only to invited guests only. But the laptop I am working from wont allow me to see your email address. If you would like to follow me again would you be kind enough to message me so I can then use your email address please. Thank you. dee x

  5. Looks like you had a lovely, and well deserved break. The shops are beautiful, as the chairs will be once you have waved your magic wand!

  6. that looks like a lovely mooch!
How funny, I've just bought identical chairs this week. I re-covered the seats in Cath Kidston oilcloth today and have literally delivered them to my unit an hour ago!! They sit alongside formica top tables in red and blue and a vintage kitchen cabinet!

  7. Lol, my poor hubby trails after me (well pushes my chair) and is very good, will point out a shop I may like and really does his best to make it as accessible for me as he can. I love a good poke about and like you find it much easier if my Imo isn't with us as she gets bored. Those chairs are going to look fab :) xx

    1. I bet it's quite a challenge getting into some of these shops, they are usually piled so higgledy piggledy :) x

  8. I feel like I was right there alongside you in the shops! Lovely antiques throughout ... sigh. My husband is into antiques, but he isn't into thrift stores. So we go to a few antique stores together once in a blue moon. My son used to love going to the thrift store with me to pick up cheap toys, but now he finds the people shopping in the store "depressing". I'm sure the chairs will look lovely when painted, and recovered! Wendy

  10. The shop with the 'proper' vintage looked fab.I tend to go around shops on my own, otherwise I feel compelled to exit too quickly! My children are used to charity shop jaunts, but like yours get bored. I am ever determined to prove that secondhand things are usually much better than new!Flissx

  11. Haha! I recognise that entirely. I took my girls on the Skåne art tour (where artists open their houses over easter) a few days ago and I had the most stressful 10 minutes of my life with my 2 and 4 year old in a ceramicists workshop. We were lucky to get out of there alive, the way the ceramicist was looking at us too! Next year I'm going alone! PS Great finds!

  13. I know what you mean about Avant Garde, I used to really like this shop but everything seems to be new in there these days. I haven't been to Matlock for ages but after seeing your photos I think I might have to pop over this weekend!
I love your chairs and can't wait to see them when you have worked your magic!!!

  14. sounds like you have your husband well-trained. mine just huffs and puffs so it is best to do shopping on my own!

can't wait to see your finished chairs!

  15. Those shops look lovely with so many treasures! My family aren't as keen as me on visiting vintage shops. My daughter too can feel sick if the smell is too strong! I find if I go on my own I can look at things in more leisurely and enjoyable way!

  18. What a great weekend! My husband does like vintage shops, thankfully - as long as there are books :) I have half a dozen chairs like that which I have been buying over the months from the charity shop and yet to revamp. Looking forward to seeing what you so with yours.

  19. OOOhh I could have spent a fortune in those shops! Me and my husband take it in turns to go to the others 'shops' he finds the 'husband' seat as he calls it when I'm mooching around and I have perched many a time on a drum stool while he insists on trying every synthesizer in the shop ( I don't even know if that's spelt correctly and I cant be bothered to get the dictionary out :-) It sounds like you had a lovely trip away and I can't wait to see your chairs turn out, Sam xx

  24. Looks like a wonderful weekend. When I went to the Peak District I was heavily pregnant with the twins so not much shopping got done with all my huffing and puffing at every step!

Children and lovely shops just don't go together do they, it's always much more fun when you don't have to watch what the little scoundrels are trying to steal/break/lick... :-)

  25. I can't really remember what it's like to go shopping without children! I think I'm destined to be the only one in our house who likes those sort of shops. Simon doesn't get my love of all things pretty and vintage and I suspect I won't get much support from my two little boys as they grow up. Good job I have a Sister to share my taste with. I think your chairs are going to look fantastic. Look forward to seeing them finished. Fiona x

  28. Love the chairs, Im still having a colour crush with turquoise and given half a chance would paint them in shades of turquoise! My problem with Vintage shopping is that I see what I'd like but point blank refuse to pay the price...I do like to get ideas though and seriously feel like I'll POP when I find that 'look' on the thrifty side!!

  37. Wandering through secondhand shops, especially in other places, is my idea of heaven that no one else in the family shares. It's completely not doable with 5 kids so I usually do the "Oh, mind if I just pop in there for a couple of minutes....there's a lovely park over there, won't be long.......". Thanks for sharing these photos and i can't wait to see your chairs too :-D Mel x

  38. I so know what you mean about kids not wanting to go into vintage or nic-nac shops. It's great having the time every so often to wander around at our own pace and not hearing "can we go now" every second beat!!
