What Do You Do With The Seams?

And, no I'm not talking about The Sewing Bee, although I am enjoying the programme. It is however putting me off having a go at making my own clothes, gosh the stress! (Those of you outside the UK, it's a dressmaking competition!).

Sometimes I wrap them around an old fashioned peg and give them away to friends as presents....don't they look sweet....oh, and I usually wrap something else up too, they don't just get a peg!

I thought I'd do something else instead, so out came Mr GG (glue gun of course!) and one of the many lampshades I seem to be acquiring, another addiction me thinks....

A very worthwhile hour....well I think so....

The girls wanted to know what it will look like when it's finished.......oh dear! It actually looks much nicer in the 'flesh', the colours are so ice-creamy and soft.

Thank you for your comments on Minnie's bed, she's taken to it like a duck to water!

Welcome to those new to VSA, hope you are enjoying your visits. As you can see from my previous posts, I'm mainly painting and playing with wallpaper at the moment....that's because Clarice, my sewing machine, still needs some attention so I really need to get my act together and get her serviced/fixed!

My hexie quilt waits patiently, I REALLY should do some more!

My little cabinet has a coat of paint, a few more to do I think then I can share it with you!

Bye for now....

Oh and my Etsy shop is now open again!

Ada :) x

  3. Ada I laughed to see you utilising every scrap - I do this too. I have boxes of bits which I'm sure I will never find a use for, but I just HAVE to save them!

    Loving those hexes! Lxx

  5. They would make very pretty homemade bias binding (should you want to sew your own clothes) or you could sew them together in long strips and do chunky rag crochet. They would make lovely mats, bags or pot stands.

Your hexie quilt is looking gorgeous too.

  6. What about a wreath along the lines of the ones that lurk in the Silly Old Suitcase - I always think they look so pretty! http://sillyoldsuitcase.blogspot.com/

  7. Adorable little peg doll and lampshade! Your daughter's comment is so funny! Another use for scraps is paper piecing patchwork, as you can work with very tiny pieces and get very precise shapes ... just something more you could check out on the web in your 'spare' time!! Wendy

  9. Ooh that hexy quilt looks familiar, I have one right next to me, and I snuggle under it every evening and sometimes during the day.
My friend and I are going to have a go at some dressmaking, watch this space!

  10. Oh, i just wanted to tell you, how about a fabric scrap wreath! ;-)
I also use those little strips and pieces of fabric to sew on little projects
like lavender bags, if you stitch it with a zigzag it looks gorgeous...
And how about wrapping a present or your packages with it?

    enjoy your pretty seams! xx

  13. Oh Ada, your quilt is gorgeous! How big is it going to be? I have a similar one in the offing too, not nearly as "done" as yours though. I second Wendy about using the bigger seams for tiny EPP patchwork. For the really small hexy's - or diamond even - freezer paper is a must to stop you getting cramp whilst manipulating them. Can't wait to see what you get up to next!

  14. Your hexie quilt looks beautiful!
Maybe you could use some of the widest seams for something like this: http://sonjafraasunnfjord.blogspot.no/2012/06/urofillekransfillekrone.html

  18. Ahhh Ada your hexie quilt is so gorgeous that I felt like crying when I saw it. my cushion cover from your material is just not working out and now I don't know what to do with all the hexies I cut. More U Tube me thinks. BTW your lampshade is certainly original. Very you.

  19. Oh Ada, my heart skipped a beat when I saw your hexie quilt! I think that may have to go on my 'to make one day' list. What size hexies did you use? They look quite large and the perfect size to get enough of the pattern of your fabric.
About the edges, perhaps they could be sewn together to make the ribbon for bunting? I like your peg doll, very sweet. x

  20. now if you watch Jennie Rayment on create and craft she would be telling you all the scraps should be use up with an embellishing machine! I have saved lots but the other day had a play and did not like so I own up to throwing a lot of scraps away. Also have a tin full of thread scraps, maybe one day I will use them feeling guilty about throwing my scraps away after reading the comment so promise to start saving again

  21. Yes, there are only so many scraps of fabric one can keep 'in case they come in handy'. The lampshade is ingenious! Not really enjoying the 'Sewing Bee', it's not as addictive as the Bake-Off programme. I used to make some clothes but mostly ball gowns as I could never find any at reasonable prices and I used to make things for my daughter and doll's clothes but I am surprised that people make their own now when items can be bought so cheaply. Of course you get the individuality but it can so easily look homemade.

  23. I love the way you've used the seams! Gorgeous. I never know what to do with the loose ends of yarn when I've sewn them in and cut them. The wool ones can be felted, but the cotton and acrylic ones end up in the bin which is a shame as they look so pretty. x

  24. They are useful for tying up little prezzies and parcels. I do love your lampshade, I have one stashed away for the exact same project. mel x

  27. Hi Ada, the peg dollies are lovely! I find the hems are good for making labels. I saw a computer chair today and wondered about covering it, but, I haven't got the glue gun or staple gun and I think they would be needed, so i will ponder it a bit longer! by the way your garland went in the post yesterday so should be with you soon, enjoy! 29. Love the idea of the lampshade binding....and the peg dollies too! You could use the hems for tying up bundles of fabric or as strips for ribbon patchwork perhaps, sewing them down on a foundation piece of plain cotton....Your hexie quilt is looking really lovely.
    Wishing you a wonderful weekend!
