Both of my daughters are special. One is extra special, in that she sees the world from a slightly different perspective, in her own unique way. Because of this fact, the adults around her need to dig deep in order to find her. Mrs H is excellent at Digging Deep, she has her own enormous spade and she has indeed dug deep. She has found the treasure in my daughter, and my daughter has known that, and she loves Mrs H for it.
Today she leaves primary school behind her, and she finds change very difficult, but because of Mrs H, it will be a little easier. Thank You Mrs H.
My other special daughter has really blossomed this year with Mrs R. Sometimes when you have an extra special sister, things can be a little difficult and it can make you want to stay in your shell where it's safe. Mrs R has helped her come out of her shell.
She now has Grand Plans, she is going to be an author and an artist ( and I actually think she will!). Mrs R knew exactly what she needed. Thank You Mrs R.
I made these gifts for them, I love handmade gifts, the stitches might not be all straight, but they were made with deep appreciation for the kindness and skill they have shown. I hope they like them ( I have since found out Mrs R buys Mollie Makes every month, so I should be OK there!).

That's lovely Ada, and I know these special teachers will love & appreciate your gifts (how could they not!). I graduated from High School 30 years ago this year (aaargh!) but I still have very precious memories of some very special teachers. Happy Friday :-)

Oh my - your lovely words about your daughter's teacher have bought a little tear to my eye. My younger daughter does not like school, any school, one jot - some teachers understand her and she loves those lessons. You have made lovely things here - my stitches are never, ever straight but that is makes them stand out from the big business ones.

ReplyDeleteI have realised since my children have started school that teaching is a vocation, we have had awesome ones again this year and I am so grateful for that - I'm sure yours will love their gifts - well done!

ReplyDeleteI am also biased being a teacher too, but in my class, my kids are all special. Each in their own unique way. Some with issues far beyond what we can see on the surface.
ReplyDeleteTo have a parent like you acknowledge the work of your girl's teachers in such a way is beautiful. What you may think is a simple gesture, is actually a huge chunk of gratitude to a special teacher!

Lovely post, Ada. Yes, a good teacher is a real blessing. Our grandson -currently visiting us - has Asperger's and has been blessed with one or two brilliant teachers. I have to say they do things better in this respect in New Zealand - but transitions are very difficult for children/people who need a strong, structured environment in which to blossom. Jolly good luck to both of your lovely 'special people' and I hope they find more great teachers in the years ahead.

ReplyDeleteThanks everyone for your kind words. I am so proud of both of my daughters, the are both fantastic and it has been great watching them blossom under such good care this year! We have just had 2 days of celebration for my eldest daughter, leaving primary school is a big land mark! She looked fantastic at the prom! My other daughter has another great teacher next year, so it's all looking good! Ada :)

Love the gifts you made for the girls wonderful teachers. It does make the hugest difference doesn't it. My boy is special- he is my complicated/quirky one I suspect the same as your biggest girl, we have had great teachers and he loves school so far. melx
ReplyDeleteI love hwat you said about the teachers and the phrase, 'digging deep.' It was really touching. My friend's little boy has Asperger's and my boyfriend Roman has a really nice rapport with him. Some people don't make the effort or seem a little frightened of difference, so it is lovely when they have the special something.
ReplyDeleteChildren have sch talents and hidden depths. When I worked in a school as a learning support assistant, a girl that I worked with and supported put a little drawing she did of me in my drawer. I was so touched!
You sound like a caring and thoughtful Mum, it is really sweet.
It is funny hat you siad about people with dyslexia often thinking outside the box. I often wonder if it is just another way of seeing the world really. xxx
Thank you all for your comments. Some of you obviously have experience of autistic spectrum disorders. Very often these children, especially those who are on the 'high functioning' end of the spectrum, look like any other child. It's only their actions that would make you aware of any difference. Next time you see a child having a 'hissy fit' when her mother is trying to put on some sun cream, or buy new shoes for her, it might not be that she is 'naughty'! Ada :)
