Where it all began?

Yesterday I was sorting through my treasure chest, a large pine blanket chest, full of special memories and I came across these.....

The little rag doll on the top is the first thing I ever made, well from fabric anyway, I was a 'Playschool' fanatic when I was little. Can you remember that programme? Each episode had a 'Making Item' where we were shown how to make something out of old boxes and wool. Each day I would make what I had seen on the show, apparently my Mum would dread this! She wasn't bothered by the mess too much, but rather would we have all the empty boxes we needed!
Anyway, as I was saying, this was the first fabric thing I made, with my best friend Tracey and her mum. The little horse was a Brownie project I needed to complete for a badge!

The trio above were little trinkets I picked up from a day trip to Skegness, we went each year with the local Pub, all the children received a bottle of pop, a packet of crisps and a pound note in an envelope. I should imagine that's how these were purchased! We sang all the way there and slept all the way back!

I will tell you more about the Brown Tub behind them another day....

Above is some books I covered with wallpaper, probably in the early 70's....now that must be where my wallpaper addiction was

  1. You did well, Ada, to have produced that little stuffed horse while you were in Brownies - I remember having a scrawny bit of fabric which I was 'embroidering' for a badge - I hated it, and it really was terrible!

Powerful things, memories, aren't they, I have been having chats with my younger (Kiwi) son these past couple of weeks and it is strange listening to his perspective of his childhood.

    Keep up the good blogging!

  2. Ah, this takes me back, especially the wallpaper covered books - we had to do that with all our excercise books at school!

Thanks for your lovely message on my blog - I don't know how private messaging works on Blogger, haven't managed to find your message - sure it's just me being dense! Can you email me at rainbowvintagehome@gmail.com? Ta love! x

  4. I came across your blog whilst blog hopping. The wallpaper covered school books brought back memories. I used embossed wallpaper on some of mine and in boring lessons I used to draw round and round the raised pattern.

  7. I'm impressed that you made the horse as a Brownie, and the wallpaper covered books took me back too. In the late 70s teenage me chose what I see now was the most vile purple and pink wallpaper for my bedroom walls but I thought it was perfect then. Funny how tastes change and fashions roll back round!

    1. Hi Annie, if you look close enough the stitches are shocking! I was however very proud of it! The wallpaper by the way sounds fab! Ada :)

  8. Seeing patterns from the 70's is so nostalgic and often I recognise them! I loved seeing your early little makes, children's sewn things are so sweet and special.
    Have a happy weekend.

    1. I agree Helen, children have a pure creativity about them, both of my children are creative, one musically and the other is a natural artist, I'm looking forward to seeing how these talents develop! Have a lovely weekend too, Ada :)
